Black Christmas

200 year old First Black Christmas celebration, The Johnkankus, based on West African Masquerade traditions. The Black Christmas celebration that traveled around the world with the African Diaspora. One of America’s first environmental (Save the Earth) holidays where everything was created out of found objects, rags, tatters and recycled materials.

Irene Smalls teaches children - and their teachers - to fully re-create this authentic African-American celebration, making the costumes, hats and masks, dancing the dances and singing the songs in your own classroom or school. Slavery in America

Based on primary source slave narratives hear the voices of joy, pain and pride from authentic folk tales, factual accounts and songs. Irene Smalls explores African-American history through holidays.

Black Thanksgiving

Corn shuckings, a late November 1800’s rural harvest celebration, the only time in enslavement when slaves could freely invite one another to attend. A vital economic activity for the slaves and farmers. Shucks were the primary source of food for the animals and used to make beds, hats, basket, etc.
